Unequal City

In Unequal City: Race, Schools, and Perceptions of Injustice, sociologist and criminal justice expert Carla Shedd illuminates how schools either reinforce or diminish the social inequalities that shape the worlds of adolescents. Shedd draws on interviews with Chicago youth at four public high schools with differing student bodies to offer new insight into their experiences.

Shedd concludes that students’ perception of injustice depends on the racial composition of the student body. In this Huffington Post article titled “When Police Run Our Schools”, Shedd discusses how her upbringing in Jackson, Mississippi influences her perception of the power of a supportive school community.
